Daylight in Scotland vs England: Edinburgh and Lerwick vs London
Shetland gets almost 19 hours of daylight at midsummer and under 6 at midwinter. London sits comfortably in the middle. Here are the real numbers.
Scotland gets more daylight than England in summer and less in winter, and the gap is bigger than most people expect. On June 21, 2026, London has 16 hours 38 minutes of daylight, Edinburgh has 17 hours 36 minutes, and Lerwick in Shetland has 18 hours 55 minutes. On December 21, the order reverses: London gets 7 hours 49 minutes, Edinburgh 6 hours 57 minutes, and Lerwick just 5 hours 49 minutes.
In other words, Lerwick gains more than two hours on London at midsummer and gives exactly two hours back at midwinter. Over a year, both places get roughly the same total daylight; Scotland simply has it distributed more unevenly.
Midsummer: June 21, 2026
| Place | Latitude | Sunrise | Sunset | Daylight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plymouth | 50.4°N | 5:05 AM | 9:31 PM | 16h 26m |
| London | 51.5°N | 4:43 AM | 9:21 PM | 16h 38m |
| Manchester | 53.5°N | 4:39 AM | 9:41 PM | 17h 02m |
| Edinburgh | 56.0°N | 4:26 AM | 10:02 PM | 17h 36m |
| Inverness | 57.5°N | 4:17 AM | 10:19 PM | 18h 01m |
| Lerwick | 60.2°N | 3:38 AM | 10:34 PM | 18h 55m |
All times are British Summer Time. Edinburgh's sunset after 10 PM is the headline, but the real story is twilight. Civil twilight in Edinburgh lasts until 11:05 PM; in Lerwick it lasts until 12:25 AM and returns at 1:46 AM. Shetland's short, luminous summer night is known locally as the simmer dim. You can see the whole month on the Lerwick June 2027 calendar.
Midwinter: December 21, 2026
| Place | Sunrise | Sunset | Daylight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plymouth | 8:14 AM | 4:15 PM | 8h 00m |
| London | 8:03 AM | 3:53 PM | 7h 49m |
| Manchester | 8:22 AM | 3:51 PM | 7h 28m |
| Edinburgh | 8:42 AM | 3:39 PM | 6h 57m |
| Inverness | 8:57 AM | 3:32 PM | 6h 35m |
| Lerwick | 9:08 AM | 2:57 PM | 5h 49m |
A Lerwick sunset at 2:57 PM means school finishes in twilight. In Edinburgh, office workers rarely see daylight on weekdays in late December unless they get out at lunchtime. Edinburgh's figures for the whole month are on the Edinburgh December 2026 page, and London's are on the London December page.
Why Scottish sunrises are so late
Latitude explains the length of the day, but not all of the timing. Edinburgh's December sunrise is 39 minutes later than London's, yet its sunset is only 14 minutes earlier. The lopsided split comes from longitude.
The whole of Great Britain runs on one clock, set to the Greenwich meridian. Edinburgh sits about 3 degrees west of London, and every degree of longitude shifts solar time by 4 minutes. So the Sun reaches its highest point in Edinburgh roughly 12 minutes after it does in London. That pushes both sunrise and sunset later, which partly offsets the shorter afternoon and exaggerates the late morning.
Plymouth shows the same effect in England. It is farther south than London, so it has more winter daylight, but it is also 4 degrees west, so its December sunset at 4:15 PM is 22 minutes later than London's.
The clock change debate
This is why proposals to keep British Summer Time all year tend to meet resistance in Scotland. With clocks an hour ahead in winter, an Edinburgh sunrise near 9:42 AM in late December would be common, and in Shetland it would come after 10 AM.
Spring and autumn: Scotland changes faster
At the equinoxes, everyone in Britain gets about 12 hours. On March 20, 2026, London has 12 hours 10 minutes and Edinburgh 12 hours 11 minutes. But from there, Scotland pulls away quickly:
- April 21: London 14h 14m, Edinburgh 14h 38m, Inverness 14h 48m
- August 21: London 14h 15m, Edinburgh 14h 39m, Inverness 14h 49m
Spring in the north brings a steeper run of lighter evenings. Autumn brings a steeper slide, and when clocks go back on October 25, 2026, Edinburgh's sunset drops from 5:50 PM to 4:48 PM overnight. Our guide to how the clock change affects sunrise and sunset has the numbers for both cities.
Light for photographers and walkers
Latitude affects more than the length of the day. In northern Scotland the Sun rises and sets at a shallow angle, sliding along the horizon rather than dropping steeply. That stretches out the low, warm light around sunrise and sunset, and lengthens twilight. Photographers in Shetland and the Highlands get more time to work with soft light than those in southern England, especially in midsummer. The flip side is that in winter the Sun barely clears nearby hills, so glens and north-facing slopes can stay in shadow for much of the short day.
Where Northern Ireland fits
Belfast, at 54.6°N, sits between Manchester and Edinburgh in latitude but far to the west, about 6 degrees west of London. On June 21, 2026, it gets 17 hours 16 minutes of daylight, with sunset at 10:04 PM, two minutes later than Edinburgh's. On December 21 it gets 7 hours 15 minutes, with sunset at 3:59 PM. Belfast's westerly position gives it later evenings than any English city in summer and later winter afternoons than Edinburgh, at the cost of a sunrise at 8:44 AM on the winter solstice.
What it means if you are visiting
- Summer hiking in the Highlands gives you enormous daylight margins. Starting a hill walk at 4 PM in late June is reasonable when sunset is after 10 PM and civil twilight lasts past 11.
- Winter trips need a plan for the dark. In December, budget roughly six and a half usable hours in Inverness, and start early.
- Northern lights are more realistic in Shetland, Orkney and the far north of the mainland in the long autumn and winter nights. Check the Scotland region page for city times across the country.
